Top 11 Newborn Problems (and How to Gently Fix Them Without Crying It Out)

If the newborn stage feels harder than you expected, you’re not failing — you’re learning. Many common newborn struggles have gentle, practical solutions rooted in feeding, sleep timing, and routines.

The short answer: full feedings® can help solve many common newborn problems because feeding, sleep timing, gas, routines, and overnight waking are deeply connected in the early weeks. If your newborn is crying often, feeding for only a few minutes, waking all night, refusing to be put down, or taking short naps, the solution is usually not cry it out — it is checking hunger, burping, wake windows, daytime intake, and simple routines. Most newborn struggles can be gently improved by supporting full feeds every 2 to 3 hours, age-appropriate wake time, and responsive sleep foundations.

Here’s why this matters: The newborn phase is beautiful — and brutal. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and unsure of what your baby needs, you’re not alone. These early weeks can bring up big questions, constant crying, and a deep sense of “Am I doing this right?” Many of us leave the hospital wondering: What do I do next? How do I care for this baby? How do I know what they need?

Good news? Many of the most common newborn problems are fixable with some simple shifts in feeding, sleep timing, and routines that honor both your baby and your needs.

Below are the top issues we hear from parents (yes — the things you’re Googling at 3 a.m.), plus gentle, proven solutions from The Full Feedings® Method.

Think of this as a parenting checklist. When a problem comes up, work through each solution and “check off” what you’ve tried to help narrow down what could be left.

You don’t need to “push through” newborn struggles alone.

Our Infant Sleep & Feeding Programs help you gently troubleshoot the most common newborn challenges — without cry it out and without forcing anything.

1. My baby cries all day (and I don’t know why)

Possible causes: Hunger, overstimulation, gas, over tiredness

Try:

➕ Feed fully and frequently (every 2–3 hours during the day)
Burp well — we recommend burping every 5 minutes for up to 5 minutes
Keep baby upright after feeds for 10–15 minutes
Use a dark, quiet space for naps
Keep wake windows age-appropriate — a newborn’s wake window is typically around 40 minutes, including feed time
If your baby is inconsolable, contact your pediatrician. Taking a video of what you’re seeing can help identify a quicker solution.

2. My baby won’t let me put them down

Possible causes: Underfed, overtired, disrupted sleep cycle

Try:

➕ Focus on full daytime feedings so baby sleeps longer between feeds
Use a 30-minute feeding window to ensure full intake
Try a mix of contact naps and crib naps to build balance
Use baby-led, parent-directed routines to prevent overtiredness

3. My baby only sleeps 20–45 minutes unless held

Possible cause: Over tiredness, hunger, lack of sleep rhythm, trapped gas

Try:

➕ Follow age-appropriate wake windows (this matters more than nap length)
Feed closer together during the day (every 2–2.5 hours)
Add a dream feed at night (10–11 p.m.)
Keep the sleep environment dark and calm
Burp well — trapped gas can cause babies to wake prematurely

4. Cluster feeding feels non-stop

Possible causes: Normal newborn behavior (especially weeks 2–6), short feeds

Try:

➕ Aim for full feeds, even if baby feeds frequently
Expect cluster feeding during growth spurts (it boosts supply!)
Create a cozy feeding space and plan for it
Aim for sleep between feeds to avoid snacking patterns

5. Baby feeds for 5 minutes and falls asleep

Possible causes: Snacking, sleepy feeding, latch issues

Try:

➕ Gently stimulate baby during feeds (burp, switch sides, undress lightly)
Work toward a full 30-minute feeding window (including burps)
➕ Wake baby fully before starting the feed
➕ Focus on fuller daytime feeds to support longer night sleep

6. Naps are unpredictable or nonexistent

Possible causes: Too much daytime sleep, not enough sleep, or off-timed naps

Try:

➕ Follow age-appropriate Optimal Wake Times
Cap naps as needed to protect nighttime sleep
➕ Focus on a consistent start to the day (6:00–7:30 a.m.)
➕ Use natural light and dark cues
➕ Don’t obsess over nap length — preventing over tiredness matters more

7. Baby is waking all night long (sooner than every 3 hours)

Possible causes: Not getting enough calories during the day

Try:

➕ Focus on full daytime feedings
➕ Keep the same number of full feeds each day
Track 24-hour intake when age-appropriate
➕ Use a dream feed until 12–16 weeks

Frequent night waking is usually about daytime intake — not bad habits.

We’ll show you how to gently move calories to the daytime and support longer stretches of sleep.
