How to Prevent 5AM Wake-Ups in Infants & Toddlers: Expert Sleep Solutions for Parents
5am is one of the hardest wake-up times for parents.
It’s almost morning — but not quite. And what you do at this hour can either reinforce early rising or help your baby start sleeping later.
If your baby or toddler is waking consistently around 5am, it’s not random — and it’s not because they’re “just an early riser.” There is always a reason, and once we identify it, we can fix it.
Is 5am Nighttime or Morning?
Early morning wakings live in a biological gray zone. Cortisol begins to rise, melatonin drops, and sleep becomes lighter — which means this is the easiest time for sleep to fall apart.
That’s why your response at 5am matters more than almost any other wake-up.
Babies Under 3 – 3.5 Months: Treat 5am as Nighttime
If your baby is under 3 – 3.5 months, we treat a 5am wake-up as a middle-of-the-night (MOTN) feeding.
At this age:
➕ Hunger is real.
➕ Circadian rhythm is immature.
➕ We are not pushing “morning” yet.
What to do:
➕ Feed fully.
➕ Get them back to sleep.
➕ Wake by 7:30am at the latest to start the day with a full feeding and full wake window.
Babies Around 3 Months: Gently Delaying the Feed
If your baby is:
✔️ Over 10 weeks.
✔️ Has no other night feeds.
✔️ And you don’t believe they’re hungry at 5am.
You can try rocking or soothing them back to sleep to delay the feeding closer to 6am. This helps shift calories to daytime and supports a more consistent start of day.
Once asleep again, wake by 7–7:30am to protect daytime rhythm.
Struggling to know when to feed vs when to soothe?
Our Infant Online Program teaches you exactly how to respond to early morning wakings — without guesswork.
Babies Over 3 – 3.5 Months: 5am Wake-Ups Are Not Random
We don’t believe babies are “just early risers.”
For babies over 3–3.5 months, early morning wakings always have a cause — and they are almost always fixable.
We look at four core “ingredients”:
➕ Hunger
➕ Daytime sleep totals
➕ Last wake window too long / bedtime too late
➕ Last wake window too short / bedtime too early
Let’s break them down.
Is Your Baby Hungry at 5am?
If your baby is hungry at 5am, you should always feed.
We never withhold food from a hungry baby — and feeding will not delay sleeping through the night.
The problem isn’t the feeding — it’s how it’s handled.
If your baby is:
✔️ Over 3 months
✔️ Has no other night feeds
We often recommend temporarily treating 5am as the start of the day:
➕ Feed fully
➕ Have a full wake window
➕ Then nap
This helps reset the circadian rhythm and move calories earlier in the day.
What If Your Baby Has Other Night Feeds?
When babies still have night feeds, we focus on milk management:
✔️ Making earlier middle of the night feeds full
✔️ Strengthening the dream feed
✔️ Increasing daytime intake
As intake shifts earlier, the 5am wake naturally moves later.
Night feeds + early mornings?
Inside our Infant Online Program, we show you how to consolidate feeds and move sleep without crying it out.
Did They Get Too Much Daytime Sleep?
Babies can only sleep a certain amount in 24 hours. If too much of that sleep happens during the day, early mornings are often the first place it shows up.
Waking your baby during the day helps:
✔️ Protect nighttime sleep
✔️ Ensure full feedings®
✔️ Prevent early morning wakings

Is the Last Wake Window Too Long or Too Short?
Too long (overtired):
➕ Common under 6 months
➕ Leads to cortisol spikes and early wakes
➕ Try a shorter last wake window + earlier bedtime
Too short (undertired):
➕ Common over 6 months
➕ Try gently extending the last wake window
➕ Avoid bedtimes earlier than 6:30pm for most babies
Small adjustments over a few days can make a big difference.
What to Do Right Now
✔️ If you think they’re hungry: feed fully and work on increasing daytime intake
✔️ If you don’t think they’re hungry: rock back to sleep and evaluate daytime sleep and wake windows
You don’t need to overhaul everything — strategic tweaks are often enough and we can help!
