Newborn Feeding Every Hour and Not Sleeping? The Original full feedings® Solution

If you’re a parent who’s been told your baby should “feed frequently” but you’re still struggling with short naps, night wakings, or a fussy little one — you’re not alone. And if you’ve recently heard the term “full feedings” tossed around, let’s set the record straight.

The Full Feedings Method® was designed to do more than just stretch feeds — it was created to meet your baby’s biological needs while gently supporting sleep, without ever using cry-it-out.

I’m Ann Marks, founder of full feedings®, and yes—I’m the original source behind the “full feedings” concept that’s helped thousands of families find balance with feeding and sleep since before it was trendy.

What Is a Full Feeding?

full feeding means your baby is getting an age-appropriate amount of milk in one sitting—whether breastfed or bottle-fed. It’s not just about frequency; it’s about intake.

Research shows that newborns have very small stomachs—only about 1.5 to 3 oz by the end of the first week—so frequent, full feedings are critical to support growth, brain development, and milk supply in the early days (Spangler & Gildersleeve, 2019).

As babies grow, full feedings help ensure they’re taking in enough during the day to sleep better at night.

These are two different feeding patterns — but the same total ounces per day. The difference? One supports restful sleep, the other often leads to night wakings.

Breastfed babies can also achieve full feedings through flexibility. It’s not about rigid times — it’s about ensuring they’re actually full and satisfied at each feed.

Snacking vs. Full Feedings

Frequent small feeds (aka snacking) often lead to short naps, underfeeding, and increased night wakings.

Research shows that fragmented feeding patterns can disrupt developing circadian rhythms and create more overnight disruptions (Rivkees, 2003). That’s why we focus on full, satisfying feeds during the day to naturally consolidate sleep without using sleep training.

Should You Be on a Schedule?

Nope. Not in the rigid sense. Babies aren’t robots and trying to follow a strict schedule will prove challenging and only stress you out.

That’s why we believe in a baby-led, parent-directed routine that honors your baby’s cues while helping guide them toward more balance. That means:

✔️ Feeding on demand—but encouraging full feeds (every 2-3 hours for the entire first year)
✔️ Following wake windows, not a rigid clock
✔️ Gently shifting intake toward the day

It’s flexible—but strategic.

How full feedings® Help Sleep (Without Crying It Out)

Research shows that when babies get enough calories during the day, they sleep longer at night (Cohen et al., 2012). Babies don’t need sleep training—they need enough milk, age-appropriate routines, and gentle guidance from us.

That’s what The Full Feedings Method® does best.

It’s a no-cry, needs-based system that prevents the issues many other programs try to “fix” later with crying.

Why This Method Stands Apart

Anyone can toss around the phrase “full feedings®” (even though they shouldn’t due to Copyright Laws). But The Full Feedings Method® is the original approach that teaches you how to:

    • Feed fully & frequently (to support supply & sleep)
    • Create a flexible, age-appropriate routine
    • Meet your baby’s needs and sleep better—without tears

I developed this method after seeing firsthand what families really need: a clear, gentle, no-nonsense plan from birth that actually works.

And guess what? It’s rooted in science.
